Discover Japan through a robot translator
The next time you do business or travel in Japan, you might have a little robotic friend accompany you instead of human translator.
As the number of foreign tourists in Japan has dramatically increased in recent years, KINKI Nippon Tourist (KNT) and FueTrek joined hands and prepared to introduce the new era of Japan tourism by breaking the language barrier with innovative solutions.
Many foreigners who don’t speak Japanese may have a frustrating experience trying to communicate with local staff, and many local entrepreneurs in hospitality industry, likewise, may have a hard time finding staff with sufficient language skills to properly serve their guests.
Knowing this and relying on FueTrek’s state of the art speech recognition, machine translation and text-to-speech technologies, KNT and FurTrek planned to offer tourists the small robots, wearable devices and tablets which can translate multiple languages to Japanese and vice versa.
Though the idea seems to be exciting news for foreigners, the question remains whether the majority of local hotels, restaurants and small businesses will actually consider robots as their option since many Japanese people still prefer foreigners to learn their language and culture.
